Quick Quest for a 24-Hour Vacation in Aspen

3 Girls + 24 Hrs + Luxury Ski Vacation = Aspen, Colorado

Written by Stacey Sapp for KTC Consulting LLC Client Molly Gibson Lodge  2-15-13  See pictures below.

View of Aspen, Colorado's quaint, historic downtown
Two weeks ago, we had a mission. Spend 2 days getting to know the Molly Gibson Lodge, Hotel Aspen and everything the town of Aspen has to offer for a luxury vacation on a budget. This was no small challenge, considering that in this small, quaint ski town there is nearly as much to do as a major metropolis.

Being a resident of Colorado for 18 years, I have traveled to Aspen on several occasions: kids’ ski competitions, Jazz Aspen Snowmass annual Labor Day Concert extravaganza, and of course the ever popular occasional girls’ trip to Aspen. But this was a whole new experience for me, led by the keen guidance of Jeff Bay, manager of the Molly Gibson Lodge and Hotel Aspen and local insider extraordinaire. With a fabulous hotel room at my disposal, lift ticket on my jacket, two friends in tow, and Jeff’s expert recommendations in hand, I was ready to open my eyes to Aspen as a true ski vacationer for the first time ever.

We arrived in town after a sketchy drive on what was looking to be a powder day, one of the first really great storms of the new year had just blessed the central Colorado Rockies with some pristine Colorado dry fluff. Thanks to the generosity of Aspen Skiing Company, we were given the opportunity to ski Aspen Mountain on this glorious day. It was a Monday, the first day after the X Games, and town was quiet after the nonstop 4 day reveling of this legendary event that brings crowds of over 100,000 to Aspen each year. It was the perfect invitation to ski - a mellow weekday with few crowds and 6” of fresh snow.

In my many trips here, this was my first time ever skiing Aspen Mountain, and WOW - was I blown away! This fun, steep, but manageably sized mountain was the perfect venue for several satisfying, super-fun runs on gladed powder terrain, fast groomers and steep pitches. My favorite part of the day: discovery of the unblemished and pitch-perfect chutes in the Back of Bell area (Seibert’s, Knowlton’s, Back of Bell #1&#2), where we did giggling laps on fun, soft terrain with enough challenge to keep us going back for more.

After a satisfying few hours on the mountain, we were off to one of the landmarks of Aspen: the J Bar, one of the cornerstone's of Aspen's social scene.  This turn-of-the-century masterpiece has served a the watering hole for everyone from Jerome Wheeler to the legendary WWII 10th Mountain Division Ski Troopers during training stints in Aspen, to Golden Age movie stars John Wayne and Gary Cooper, to the many celebrities who call Aspen home. The J Bar has been beautifully restored into a warm, inviting room with charming tin ceilings, fabulous subtle lighting and sturdy, comfortable furnishings that invite you to stay for a while. Here we noshed on a delicious lunch of J Bar’s famous Twice Cooked Lollipop Chicken Wings with Chipotle-Honey Glaze, satisfyingly large fresh BBQ Chicken Salad and Baby Romaine Salad, and Venison Chili. The menu here is not for the faint at heart, but rather a soul- satisfying selection of delicious hearty snacks and entrees that make it a perfect lunch, dinner or après-ski spot. The house-made innovative cocktails are definitely a highlight!

A short walk back to the Molly Gibson Lodge and it was time to check into our rooms. The Molly is a charming, classic winter ski lodge, brimming with amenities that give incredible value for your stay. My room, an updated charming mix of modern, comfortable amenities and retro-chic vintage vibe, was spacious and well appointed. A wood-burning fireplace anchors the sunken living room of this Deluxe Suite, with accessibility to the large, sunny outdoor deck overlooking town. The focal point of the huge full bath is the Jacuzzi tub perfect for an après-ski soak. Admittedly, it was hard to leave the room again at this point and I could have easily settled into pajamas and rented a movie. But a second après ski, pre-dinner cocktailing and dinner at Element 47 awaited us, so I put on my fashionable best to move on to the next phase of this already amazing Aspen getaway.

Luckily, we had only to saunter downstairs to the incredible Molly Gibson Lodge après-ski, free for hotel guests and possible the biggest bang-for-your-buck amenity at The Molly. This fabulous daily spread is carefully attended to by Elena, whose stories and personality are as colorful as her wonderful buffet of hot and hold hors d’oeuvres. Beer, wine, hot chocolate and coffee are available to accompany Elena’s nightly theme of snacks that range from Asian to Taco Tuesday; the spread always includes cheese and crackers, fruit and homemade cookies along with an offering of hot soup or themes apps. We were now armed with a drink and some snacks on board to venture out for our next cocktail.

We stopped by Jimmy’s, an iconic Aspen neighborhood bar and restaurant that was fully packed, even on a Monday night. We squeezed in the bar for just long enough to indulge in one of their incredible hand-crafted cocktails made with fresh juices and liquors from their extensive spirits selection. We especially loved the 100 calorie Citrus Crush - made with Voli Lemon Vodka, fresh lemon, lime & mint, and soda- as this skinny cocktail didn’t threaten to spoil our dinner. Next up was a velvety glass of wine at the chic, cool Cache Cache: the sexy Aspen eatery known for a clientele as beautiful as the décor.

Finally, we land at our destination of Element 47 restaurant in The Little Nell.   Formerly Montagnas, this completely renovated, clean, contemporary space is now home to one if the most culinary forward restaurants in all of Aspen. This was a truly decadent dining experience. The plates were culinary masterpieces of composition and flavors expertly prepared by executive chef Robert McCormick. To start, the staff treated us to a bottle of their fabulous proprietary sparkling wine, n.v. Element 47 Brut, priming our palates for the flavors to come.  The Winter Vegetables Salad and Anjou Pear Tortellini dishes were starter standouts, as were the decadent entrees of Emma Farm Wagyu Beef, and delicate, flavorful Mero Sea Bass with Forbidden Rice. Dessert of apple cider doughnuts with apple jam, sorbet and crème fraîche were are stellar finish to this special meal.

Tummies full, we started toward bed but couldn’t resist a quick late-night listen to Wild Belle w/Fierce Bad Rabbit at Belly Up!, Aspen’s favorite, year-round live music club.

The next morning we were thankful for only a quick walk downstairs again to enjoy the complimentary continental breakfast at the Molly. We prepared our game plan for the day: a brisk walk to the acclaimed Aspen Art Museum before afternoon meetings and the drive home.

The Aspen Art Museum is nestled along a creek at the far South end of town, so a bit of a jaunt by foot. But it was an easy walk and a pleasant surprise once we arrived. The museum was hosting exhibits from local students examining the relationship between art and technology, along with vibrant color studies by LA contemporary artist Morgan Fisher. We was impressed with the beautiful, peaceful space of the museum, and the curator let us know that they would soon be moving to a new, even better space in town to allow more guests to enjoy what the museum has to offer, in Spring 2013.

After a bit of shopping in Aspen's internationally known downtown, sadly we had to leave for the drive home: kids, jobs and lives were waiting. But I can truly say that this one overnight in Aspen was completely recharging in every way: an incredible ski, culinary and cultural experience unrivaled in Colorado. We will be back, soon!

The Metropolitan, Beaver Creek Resort’s newest restaurant, opened on May 24, 2012 for the summer season.  The Metropolitan, or the Met for short, offers its summer menu with small plates, or tapas – one of few in the dining mecca of the Vail Valley.  “The summer season means lighter fare, drinkable wines, and leisurely time with friends and family,” said The Met’s owner, John Shipp.  “This is the perfect spot for relaxing and enjoying the longer days - good food, good wine, and a little R&R.”

The Met’s Enomatic Wine System is one of only three of its kind in the state and augments the restaurant’s already extensive list of 80 international wines with an additional “Sweet Sixteen”.  Says Manager Darryl Slate, “The wines will change often but will always have something for the wine novice to experts, as well as our signature beers and cocktails.”

Pair these with traditional Spanish tapas such as Shrimp Ceviche, Lobster Tacos or Denver Ribs, salads such as the Grilled Melon Salad or the Blue Crab Salad, and delicious home-made desserts, and patrons enjoy a sophisticated yet unintimidating dining experience for any appetite.

Beaver Creek’s only non-hotel breakfast menu at the Met is served alongside the restaurant’s DazBog espresso bar at affordable prices not found elsewhere in the resort.  Affordable breakfast plates include breakfast sandwiches served on Wolferman’s English Muffins, breakfast wraps, stone cut oatmeal, fresh baked muffins and more.  New to the breakfast menu are fruit smoothies and chilled coffee drinks.

Each Friday this summer from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m., guests can enjoy wines by the glass coupled with the Charcuterie Platter in self-serve fashion through mid-September.

The Metropolitan – where refined meets relaxed.  Open now from 7:00 am until 11:00 pm and located in the St. James Place condominiums on the east end of Beaver Creek Resort below the Dusty Boot.  For more information about The Metropolitan visit www.themetbc.com or call (970) 748-3123.

The Aspen Music Festival and School is one of the country’s premier classical summer music festivals, and will present more than 300 musical events during the 2-month season.  This summer’s festival has a patriotic theme, “Made in America”, perfectly suited for our colorful, vibrant summer here in the Colorado Rocky Mountains.

The programming will feature works from three different groups of composers: American composers working today, American composers who left for a time to study in Europe and then returned, and European composers who emigrated to America.  This summer as always, the festival features a bountiful array of singers, conductors, composers, chamber groups and orchestras who line up the calendar with talent.  Performances will be held in various beautiful indoor and outdoor venues around Aspen, including the airy and acoustically spectacular Benedict Music Tent, the intimate Joan W. and Irving B. Harris Concert Hall, and the historic Wheeler Opera House, as well as many family-friendly casual outdoor venues.

The 2012 festival is blessed to have world-acclaimed conductor-in-residence Robert Spano at the helm.  This Music Director of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra is regarded as one of the most brilliant conductors in the world.  In 2012 Mr. Spano was named the music director of the Aspen Music Festival and School, and as such he will also head the American Academy of Conducting at Aspen, an exciting addition to the festival this year.  Mr. Spano plans a big, crowd-pleasing big band opening to the season on June 28 with A Gershwin Celebration.  There is a myriad of other notable events in Mr. Spano’s repertoire to look forward to this season. A trio of diverse operas has something for every music lover’s taste, with Mozart’s The Magic Flute (June 12, 14, 16), Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd (July 26, 28, 30) and the jazz- inspired adaptation of the The Great Gatsby (August 16, 18) by John Harbison. In addition look forward to Handel’s Water Music Suite (July 5) and Grammy-nominated trumpeter Chris Botti’s return to Aspen for An Evening of Jazz and Popular Music (July 7).

Also an acclaimed school for musicians of all ages, the festival attracts some of the world’s finest classical musicians for a very unique experience combining classical music performance and education.  Now in its 63rd year, the Aspen Music School and Festival brings together the world’s top classical professionals and most promising students for a demanding and distinctive training experience. The school presents a very busy and diverse performance schedule, ranging from operas, chamber music, and children’s events to master classes and panel discussion, many of which are free. New Restaurant, The Metropolitan, opens in Beaver Creek Resort

LOCAL RESTAURANTEUR OPENS THE METROPOLITAN

New Restaurant in Beaver Creek Offers Twist on the Luxury Vacation Dining

Beaver Creek, Colorado – December 1, 2011 - Local restaurateur John Shipp, President of Dionysus Group LLC, opened the newest restaurant in Beaver Creek Resort, The Metropolitan, this morning. The Metropolitan, or the Met for short, offers one of Beaver Creek’s only non-hotel breakfast menus along with a high-end espresso bar, at affordable prices not normally found in the Vail Valley, and features one of three Enomatic Wine Dispensers found in Colorado, through which it will serve as a wine and tapas bar at night.

The concept came easy to Shipp, who as owner of the well-known Dusty Boot restaurants, discussed restaurant needs in Beaver Creek with friends. “We thought Beaver Creek needed a coffee shop besides Starbucks – one that was more warm and comfortable, one that you could hang out in. I just wanted to take that a step further and provide a sophisticated yet comfortable place to enjoy wine, drinks and my personal favorite way to eat, tapas.”

Open from 7:00 am until 11:00 pm, the Met is comfortably located in the St. James Place condominiums on the east end of Beaver Creek Resort below the Dusty Boot. Patrons will be able to use free high-speed wireless internet and plug in computers sitting in just about any seat.

A dark roast, light roast and decaf coffee from Colorado’s own Dazbog Coffee Company will be served daily and will be used in all espresso drinks. Shipp invested in La Marzocca’s Super Grinder and espresso machines to ensure the perfect grind and the most delicious espresso drinks in the Vail Valley.

The Met will use only the best ingredients in its breakfast sandwiches, such as Wolferman’s English Muffins, applewood smoked bacon, and authentic Wisconsin white cheddar cheese. The Met’s affordable breakfast menu ranges from $4 to $7, a unique price point in Beaver Creek.

At night, The Met will change over to a wine and tapas bar, with over 80 US and Int ernational wines on its list. Chosen especially by bar managers Darryl Slate and Jeff Anderson who collectively carry 50+years of restaurant experience, the Met’s wines range from $10 to $375 per bottle. “The wines will change often but will always have something to offer everyone, from the wine novice to the wine expert,” said Darryl.

The Met features the Enomatic Wine Dispenser, a wine serving machine that fits up to 16 bottles at one time, has four temperature zones for various wine types, and serves exactly a 1.5 oz, 3 oz or 6 oz serving. “This is the most incredible machine I’ve seen,” said Shipp. “It’s a great way for people to compare and taste wines to which they wouldn’t normally have access.” The Enomatic machine at The Met is only one of three in the state of Colorado.

Executive Chef Mike Bickelhaupt, a well-known chef in the Vail Valley culinary industry, will prepare approximately 15-20 different tapas nightly using the finest and freshest ingredients, including those from local farmers as available. Prices will range from $5 –$25.

Interior designer Michelle Anderson created the relaxed environment where “urban meets mountain with an old warehouse effect” according to Shipp. Using only local business partners such as Marmot Electric, Rocky Mountain Creations, Avon Plumbing, Arrigoni Woods and others. The real brick walls are paired with Austrian reclaimed wood flooring, trees damaged from beetle kill from Colorado for the bars, dark steel details, and modern lighting fixtures and furniture. “My vision was to create a comfortable yet stylish and urban environment where people can relax and have a great time,” said Shipp.

The Metropolitan will sponsor the children’s area at the base of the Audi World Cup races in Beaver Creek December 2-4. It will also host the local fundraiser for Art for Orphans on December 9, and is available for group reservations ranging from 5 to 100 people.

The Metropolitan – where refine meets relax. The Met is one of several restaurants in the Dionysus Group collection, which includes the Dusty Boot, Luigi’s Pastahouse, and Kickapoo Tavern. For more information about The Metropolitan or for group reservations, call (970) 748-3123.
